What is PRP therapy?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for hair loss is a three-step medical treatment in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp.

PRP therapy process

PRP therapy for hair loss is a three-step process. Most PRP therapy requires three treatments 4–6 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments are required every 4–6 months.

Step 1

Your blood is drawn — typically from your arm — and put into a centrifuge (a machine that spins rapidly to separate fluids of different densities).

Step 2

After about 10 minutes in the centrifuge, your blood will have separated into in three layers:

  • platelet-poor plasma
  • platelet-rich plasma
  • red blood cells

Step 3

The platelet-rich plasma is drawn up into a syringe and then injected into areas of the scalp that need increased hair growth.

How Does Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy Work Exactly?

During a PRP session, a technician draws blood, usually from a patient’s arm. He or she will then spin the blood to extract plasma. Plasma is a substance found in the blood that contains platelets, which promote hair growth, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The technician injects the plasma into areas on the scalp affected by hair loss — usually about 15 to 20 injections per PRP session

What are the Side effects of PRP therapy?

Injecting PRP involves using a person’s own platelets, which is why people receiving this treatment do not usually have any adverse reactions to the injections.

However, they may experience irritation, pain, or bleeding at or around the injection site.

Most people can resume their normal activities almost immediately after having a PRP injection.

There hasn’t been enough research to prove whether PRP is effective. It’s also unclear for whom — and under what circumstances — it’s most effective.

What is PRP face treatment?

A Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) face treatment, also known as a Vampire facial, is an advanced skin treatment which is great for skin rejuvenation. It’s a treatment which uses your own blood platelets to stimulate new cell growth, helping to improve your complexion and skin texture.

PRP improves skin texture and tone and regenerates collagen, helping reduce wrinkles and lines, tackle blemishes, improve scarring and restore a healthy, youthful glow.
